Community Support Worker

Temporary Full-time Position

STBBI is seeking a compassionate individual with an understanding of First Nations dynamics and history to as a perform Community Support Worker.

Job Description

MHS has received project funding to provide comprehensive services for the prevention of HIV. The Employee will promote health and wellness, and provide education, support and resources for people living with HIV and to the community to prevent the spread of HIV. It is important to recognize how the social determinants of health affect individuals living with or how they can put people at risk for HIV infections.
Co-Morbidities such as addiction to alcohol or substances also play a role in the spread of HIV.
The individual providing this support will have a good understanding of HIV, addictions, and resources available to community members.

 

Key responsibilities:
Outreach: Activities to share knowledge and raise awareness by conducting community events, face to face interactions, group sessions etc. will be required.
Education and Resource provision: you will be required to provide accurate information about HIV transmission, preventions, strategies and treatment options. You will distribute and explain educational materials as required.
Support Services: You must be able to advocate for people at risk within the community and healthcare system. You may be required to assist with appointments and provide transportation to and from appointments, pharmacy, etc. You will also be required to reduce the stigma associated with HIV infections. You may promote point of care testing for clients/people wanting this service.
Collaboration: You will be part of a STBBI team comprised of an RN, Case Manager and other Community Support workers for HIV. You may be required to collaborate with other health professionals providing service to your clients. You will be required to communicate verbally and in written form. You may be required to participate in or give workshops, training to others about HIV prevention.
Data Collection and Reporting: You must have excellent written and oral skills with the ability. You will be required to document services and interactions with your clients on MHS’s electronic medical record. You will also keep a record for visits, services and travel in the community and to and from events.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with HIV clients or training as a health care provider such as LPN, addictions, mental health support worker, etcKnowledge of HIV/addictions/determinants of health
  • Strong communications skills, oral and written.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills to plan events.
  • Team Player
  • Experience providing outreach services
  • Ability to work independently, motivated, and ability to anticipate client needs.
  • Nonjudgmental ability to work with diverse individuals.
  • Cree speaker is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Maskwacis Geographical area and local resources is an asset.
  • Class 5 driver’s license with clean abstract.
  • Clean Criminal record check

    Schedule

    • 7-hour shift (8:30 am to 4:30 pm)
    • 5 days a week
