Indian Residential Schools (IRS) Resolution Health Support Worker

Job Description

The purpose/goal of the Indian Residential Schools (IRS) Resolution Health Support Worker & Program is to ensure that eligible Former IRS Students, and their family member(s) have access to an appropriate level of mental wellness support services; and ensure that eligible Former IRS Students can safely address a broad spectrum of mental wellness issues related to the disclosure of childhood abuse.

Responsibilities

• Provide RHSW services to Former IRS Students and their family members.
• Work in collaboration with various organizations and communities involved in working to assist the emotional well-being of Former IRS Students at the local, regional and Provincial/territorial and national level.
• Support the emotional health and wellness of Former IRS Students and their family memgers.
• Assess the effectiveness of the RHSW Program.
• Coordinate RHSW emotional support services to Former IRS Students and their family members, when and where required, paying particular attention to those individuals in crisis and those attending IAP proceedings, IRS dispute resolution process or IRS court hearings.
• Ensure that RHSWs attend and provide emotional support to Former IRS Students who request such support at IAP proceedings, IRS dispute resolution processes, IRS court hearings and Truth & Reconciliation Commissions and /or Commemoration events over a wide geographic area using the most cost-effective means possible.
• When possible, ensure with other RHSWs nationally to develop a forum for discussion of best practices and sharing of approaches and experiences.
• Build relationships with other RHSWs nationally to develop a forum for discussion of best practices and sharing of approaches and experiences
• Build relationships with all Settlement Agreement stakeholders to raise awarness of available services to Former IRS Students under the IRS Resolution Health Support Program, Indian Residential Schools Resolution Canada and the Adjudication Secretariat.
• Provide access to debriefing opportunities for RHSWs to minimize the potential impacts of vicarious trauma associated with the provision of emotional support to Former IRS Students and their family members.
• Provide regular training opportunities for RHSWs on subjects relevant to the delivery of emotional support services, such as crisis intervention, post traumatic stress, conflict resolution, vicarious trauma and self-care, and the IRS Settlement Agreement.
• Develop an annual work plan, to be updated as required, to reflect changing regional priorities and the dynamic nature of the time linesof IAP proceedings, IRS dispute resolution process or IRS court hearings as well as the Truth & Reconciliation Commission or Commemoration events.
• Keep statistics on programs and complete monthly reports i.e. attendance, participation, interviews as required.
• Ensure all forms and documents are completed and submitted to appropriate departments for review, approval, processing and retention.
• Maintain client progress and files.
• Facilitate and attend school and community presentations
• Contribute to the Maskwacis Health Services initiatives as required
• Take additional training to meet program requirements
• Maintain confidentiality
• Other related duties as required

Qualifications

• Has experience working with Aboriginal mental health and wellness issues
• Has the capacity and flexibility to meet the emotional health support needs of potentially large numbers of Former IRS Students in a variety of locations over wide geographic areas
• Has security clearances which is appropriate for the services which are being provided
• Maintain accountability and Confidentiality
• Provide services in a culturally sensitive manner
• Proficient in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Access & Excel
• Good interpersonal skills
• Excellent communication & problem solving skills
• Excellent organizational skills
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Ability to work well on own and in a team setting
• Creative & empathetic
• Knowledge of the Maskwacis Nations Community an asset
• Cree language an asset
• Able to work shift work (including evenings, weekends & holidays – if required)
• Valid class (5) driver’s license
