Job Description
Maskwacis Health Services is looking for a qualified Social Worker to join the health services team, the successful candidate will be a key member of the treatment team. They will provide a link between the team and family as well as essential community resources. This individual will contribute to the care, treatment, and rehabilitation of the aged, physically or mentally ill individuals as well as those with disabilities.
Responsibilities
- Advocate for clients or patients to resolve crises.
- Counsel clients and patients in individual and group sessions to help them overcome dependencies, recover from illness, and adjust to life.
- Organize support groups or counsel family members to assist them in understanding, dealing with, and supporting the client or patient.
- Refer patient, client, or family to community resources to assist in recovery from mental or physical illness and to provide access to services such as financial assistance, legal aid, housing, job placement or education.
- Identify environmental impediments to client or patient progress through interviews and review of patient records.
- Utilize consultation data and social work experience to plan and coordinate client or patient care and rehabilitation, following through to ensure service efficacy.
- Plan discharge from care facility to home or other care facility.
- Collaborate with other workers providing services to clients or patients.
- Develop or advise on social policy and assist in community development.
- Collaborate with other programs to combat social problems, prevent substance abuse, or improve community health and counseling services.
- Conduct social research to advance knowledge in the social work field.
- Report child abuse or neglect cases to proper authorities when necessary.
- Oversee Meals on Wheels Program; ensure clients qualify based on need.
Qualifications
- A minimum of one-year acute care/Social Work experience, i.e., hospital is recommended.
- Graduation from an accredited University or College, BSW preferred or a Certificate in Social Work.
- Member of a professional regulatory body for Social Workers.
- Certification in Community Nursing through the Canadian Nurses Association.
- Knowledge of First Nations communities and culture is preferred.
Other Requirements

- Possess valid Class 5 AB driver’s license and own or access to a vehicle.
- Successful completion of First Aid.
- Willing to work flexible schedule.
- Must provide and possess a clear criminal record vulnerable sector check.
- Ability to speak and/or understand the Cree language (or another applicable First Nation language) would be beneficial.
